  4. Pin Point Overview

  5. What is Pin Point? • A website providing a query engine for researching parts in the Federal supply chain • Provides advanced parametric searching on physical and logistic part properties • Allows user to quickly locate groups of similar parts for possible substitution, sustainment engineering studies, and long term contracting • A User Interface to the Coherent View database. The Coherent View: • aggregates part data from over 20 DOD databases, DOD EMALL and GSA Advantage electronic part portals, and commercial and manufacturer websites • uses advanced Artificial Intelligence technology to structure part properties from unstructured narrative text, specifications, part numbers, and product descriptions

  6. Pin Point Data Richness

  7. Accessing Pin Point • Web address: https://pinpoint.xsb.com • CAC login for Government users with DOD Common Access Card (CAC) • DOD contractors may get login accounts with Defense Standardization Program Office (DSPO) approval

  8. Pin Point Login Screen Users with accounts can use Standard Login. You may request an account from DSPO Users with CAC cards can use CAC Login

  10. Navigating Pin Point

  11. NSN information lookup Text boxes with circle icons have autocompletion Start typing NSN in text box Matching NSN appear in drop down list Choose desired NSN from list

  12. NSN Information Lookup Alternately you can click on the lookup icon … …and a separate window pops up that offers additional NSN lookup options

  13. NSN information lookup Once an NSN is entered in the text box click the Search button to get information for that NSN

  14. NSN information lookup Sidebar shows different views of information available for NSN Grayed out items have no information available Initial view displayed is the basic Info view

  15. CAGE information lookup Cage to look up can be entered in text box with autocomplete function

  16. CAGE information lookup Alternately you can click on the lookup icon … …and a separate window pops up that offers additional CAGE lookup options

  17. Cage Information lookup Once a CAGE is entered in the text box click the Search button to get information for that CAGE

  18. CAGE information lookup Sidebar shows different views of information available for CAGE Grayed out items have no information available Initial view displayed is the basic Info view

  19. CAGE Information Lookup Looking up a brand name in the CAGE lookup window… … will match to the CAGE that supplies that brand

  20. Part Number Information Lookup Holding the mouse over The question mark icon … You start a part number search by typing the full or partial part number you are looking for in the text box using the * as a wildcard

  21. Part Number Information Lookup … Brings up rules for using wildcards

  22. Part Number Information Lookup Once a Part Number pattern is entered in the text box click the Search button to get information for matches to that Part Number pattern. This Pattern finds all part numbers starting with MS14303

  23. Part Number information lookup Sidebar shows different views of information available for Part Number. Grayed out items have no information available Initial view displayed is the basic Info view

  24. Part Number information lookup Selecting specific part numbers and clicking the compare button …

  25. Part Number information lookup …And you get a side by side comparison of the parts by attributes

  26. Parametric Searching

  27. Parametric Searching can be used to: • Find part similar to an NSN • Example 1 - Bearing NSN • Find parts with common attributes • Example 2 – O-Ring Attributes • Group parts based on physical and logistic properties • Example 3 – Material Problem

  28. Example 1 – Bearing NSN

  29. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 This is the results of a search on NSN 3110-00-184-0039, an Annular Ball Bearing. No referenced source is a purchasable item Clicking the Find Similar button will initiate a parametric search based on the known attributes of this NSN

  30. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 A parametric search query is filled out with all the known attributes of This NSN

  31. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 The results of this query only return the one NSN

  32. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 We modify the search by removing non-essential attributes including the reference to MIL-G-18709, an older lower performance grease specification

  33. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 Now 3 NSNs are returned that match these properties

  34. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 We can select these NSNs and compare them side by side by clicking the Compare button

  35. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1

  36. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 If we modify the query by removing the Standard Tolerance Designation, (ABEC 1 is minimal)…

  37. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 Now ten NSNs are returned

  38. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 The 10 NSNs can be compared side by side

  39. Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1 Holding the mouse over the Context Icon next to a property value pops up a window showing where that value was found or inferred

  40. Example 2 – O-Ring Attributes

  41. Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes A parametric search based on product characteristics can also be started by clicking on “with INC/FSC/FSG filters” or “without filters” We will start the next search with an INC filter

  42. Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes You can choose one or more INC, FSC, or FSG filters to limit your search. We will limit the next search to a single INC

  43. Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes We enter the INC for O-Ring by starting to type O-Ring then choosing the correct INC from the autocomplete drop down list

  44. Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes We are presented with a list of O-Ring characteristics from which we can select to build a parametric search query

  45. Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes We enter the characteristic values we are looking for and click the Submit Query button

  46. Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes We find 2 NSNs and 74 commercial part numbers that match the query characteristics Looking at AAC, AMC, AMSC, and Criticality Codes for the NSNs, we see one is purchased through open competition at a cost of $0.25 and the other is purchased from a single source at at a cost of $3.98. The AMSC code of H for this NSN means the Government does not have enough information about the part to purchase from other sources

  47. Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes Comparing the NSNs side by side and looking at the context for Cross-Sectional Height for the sole source NSN, we see that FLIS technical characteristics only has one critical dimension and the material as synthetic rubber

  48. Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes The other critical dimension and the Fluorocarbon material all come from the Caterpillar part number reference number for the NSN. There is a link to the Caterpillar website to verify this

  49. Example 3 – Material Problem

  50. Parametric Search – Grouping Parts – Material Problem Click on product characteristics search without filters
