Moving West • More Americans were moving west • Louisiana became the first state west of the Mississippi in 1812 • In early 1818 Missouri territory petitioned the US Congress to become the 23rd state.
Congressional Issue of Missouri Statehood • In 1819 there was a balance between slave (11) and free (11) states in the US Senate.
Congressional Issue of Missouri Statehood • You are member of Congress in 1820. • You have to decide on a plan that will get Missouri admitted as the 23rd state of the Union and the 12th slave state. • You will then present your plan to a Congressional Committee where you will have to all agree Missouri’s bid at statehood

Fighting Fire with Fire • The Cherokee Nation tried to beat Andrew Jackson’s policy and the State of Georgia through the Court system. • They created their own formal government by writing a Constitution • Very similar to the US Constitution!

Short Victory • The Cherokee may have won the battle in court, but the lost the war with Andrew Jackson. • President Jackson ignores the Supreme Court ruling! “John Marshall has made his decision. Now let him enforce it!”
Rude Awakening • In 1838 federal troops rounded up the remaining Cherokee people living in Georgia and forced them into stockades. • Many people were forced out with just the clothes on their back. That fall and winter 16,000 Cherokee were forced to march through the rain, sleet, and snow.
