  2. Today’s Focus • Towards the next data takingat GSI • Layout • Emulsion Setup • Electronic Setup (and trigger) • About software development • News from recente test beam and analysisactivity • Towards the next Collaboration Meeting in June • Today’s agenda

  3. Cave A, free space etc will be described by Uli Cave available on March 4. Start data taking: March 5. End data taking: March 9 Total beam time 16 hours, maybe more. Wehopenotless... Dismountingwithinmorning of March 10

  4. Emulsion Setup Start Counter Beam Monitor beam 56 cm Exposure geometry at GSI 40 cm 70 cm Emulsion chamber • Detectors support: • height range: 23.5 - 27.5 cm

  5. Exposure geometry at GSI • Emulsions chamber: • plastic material (policarbonate) • 3D printer • 0.8 cm thickness • 5 x 5.6 cm2 entrance window • 14.6x22.6 x12.2 cm3 • Weight: 15-20 kg 11.6 cm beam 17.0 cm 14.1 cm • Emulsions chamber: • 4 for run and 1 dummy for alignment INFN - Napoli

  6. Beam Characteristics • Beam characteristics (from Uli and Chris) • beam spot: 4-15 mm FWHM, gaussian/elliptical profile • Spill intensity: 102 to 108 particles per second • field size: up to 5x5 cm2 never a problem (by magnetic scanning) • the scanner takes care to provide the desired intensity regardless of fluctuations of spill/spill-pause • Beam characteristics (for our measurement) • field size: 3x3 cm2(our desiderata) • Max density (occupancy): 5000 particles/cm2

  7. Exposurestrategy • 1rtmesurement: O16 @200 MeV • Exposureoptimization with SC + BM • Beam OFF • Emulsionpositioning • Beam ON • Exposure • 2ndmesurement: O16 @400 MeV • Exposureoptimization with SC + BM • Beam OFF • Emulsionpositioning • Beam ON • Exposure

  8. GSI Setup Basic Setup 4 layer VTX ~1 m 2 layer SCN

  9. Target and Beams 16-O Beam Priority 200 MeV/u Targets: C and Polyethylene (C2H4) Available from GSI: 3 mm Graphite. Thickness = 0.55 g/cm2 5 mm PE ~0.5 g/cm2

  10. GSI Setup In a fraction of casesone or more scint. bars, in one or bothlayers, can be hit by more that 1 fragment VTX allows to predict the impact point on the scintillatorplane for eachtrack

  11. GSI Setup In a fraction of casesone or more scint. bars, in one or bothlayers, can be hit by more that 1 fragment. In layer #2 allfragments hit differentbars In thisevent in layer #1 one bar is hit by 2 fragments

  12. A first guess Fraction of eventsfullyreconstructable: 0.69 Fraction of eventswhereonly 1 layerisfullyreconstructable: 0.22 Fraction of eventswherebothlayers are notfullyreconstructable: 0.09 Howevereven in layerswheretherethere are multiple hits in a single bar, about ~50% of tracksispredicted to hit a single bar

  13. GSI Setup: other possibilities We can increase the distance of scint. from the target. Test at 150 cm: Fraction of eventsfullyreconstructable: 0.77 Fraction of eventswhereonly 1 layerisfullyreconstructable: 0.18 Fraction of eventswherebothlayers are notfullyreconstructable: 0.05

  14. Last but maybe not least (not related to geometry) Events with fragmentation in scint
