Biotic factors are all the living things or their materials in the environment. This would include organisms, their presence, parts, interaction, and wastes.
Abiotic factors are those non-living physical and chemical factors in the environment EXAMPLES • light intensity • temperature • soil and rocks • pH level (acid or base)dissolved gases, water, pollutants
Autotroph “auto”=“self “ “troph”= “feed” autotroph = producer
Heterotroph “hetero”=“different” “troph”= “feed” Heterotrophs have to feed upon another organism for food. Heterotrophs=Consumers
There are many typesofheterotrophs…FYI… “vore” is a suffix that means “an organism that eats a particular diet”
Symbiotic relationships involve at least one of the organisms benefitting from the relationship…just like on FB, there are many type of these relationships!
Commensalism is when one benefits & the other isn’t helped or harmed.
A niche is the role an organism plays in its environment (where it lives, what it eats, how much space it needs).
A balanced ecosystem is one in which there is enough food, water, shelter & appropriately arranged space for all organisms in that ecosystem.
Energy pyramids & biomass pyramids show producers on the bottom and the top predator on top.
Food webs are combinations of all of the food chains in an ecosystem.
Feeding Relationships Predatorsis are carnivores that kill their food. The organism the predator eats is called its prey. .
The 10% Rule was developed by a UF professor, Dr. Odom, who said that only 10 percent of the energy in each transfer is actually captured. So, plants only capture about 10 percent of the solar energy available to them. Herbivores capture only 10 percent of the energy stored in plants. And, the same is true "on down the line" of the food chain.
Carrying capacityis the maximum number of organisms the resources of an ecosystem can support. Psstt…Hey, Buddy! How many bears can live in this forest???
The most common elements are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, sulfur, calcium, iron, and magnesium. A jingle to help remember these nine elements is "CHOPKNS CaFe Mg" or "see Hopkins Cafe, might good".
