  3. Pau today 85 804 inhabitants live in Pau (150000 with the suburbs) Various industries are located in Pau : Total, an oilcompany, or Turbomeca, an aircraft corporation. Pau is a touristic place : The national park of the Pyreneesis close to the city. There are also several monuments in Pau, like Henri IV’s castle, the “Palais Beaumont”, which is a historical congress centre. We can add that Pau offers a wonderful view of the Pyrenees mountains from the “Boulevard des Pyrénées”

  5. The roots of Pau in History • In the 12th century, the viscounts of Bearn founded a new castle to oversee and protect the surroundings. Because it was made of a wooden fence, its name was Pau • ( “wooden pole” in the Bearn language). • Henri IV, one of the most famous kings of France, was born in Pau’s castle. He stopped the war between catholic and protestant and was murdered in Paris in 1610. • Jean-BaptisteBernadotte was born in Pau in 1763. One of Napoleon's marshals, He became Charles XIV John, king of Sweden and Norway.

  6. Louis Barthou High School . In 1620, Louis XIII, son of HenriIV gave a site in the east of Pau to the Jesuits. They built many buildings, including a college that is currently the Louis Barthou High School. It was completed in 1640. The High School is named after Louis Barthou, who was a former student of the school, and foreign minister then the prime minister under the Third Republic (1930s).
