Lesson Learned from SDM ’08 Instead of creating 3 sessions with 4 papers each, create 2 sessions with 6 papers each: • Design Process I • Design Process II / Design Engineering • With 12 initial papers, even with 4 withdrawls we would still have 4 papers in each session. • If Clark didn’t quickly respond with another paper, we would have one session with only 2 papers • Sessions with less than 4 papers: • Are discouraged by AIAA • Dilute the importance of the session (especially best paper) • Cost more $$$ than combining sessions AIAA Design Engineering TC At SDM 2008 in Schaumburg, IL
SDM ’09 Planning Meeting • May 4-7 at Palm Springs – Make reservations early!! • Special Session Requests must be submitted by July 24. • Special sessions are subjects not typically part of a TC but require a TC’s sponsorship • Abstracts are due Aug 11 • TC’s have the right to accept late abstracts but they must contact us personally since CAS will not accept them directly • Manuscripts due March 30 • 6 papers per session, maximize use of rooms • No invited papers but can be encouraged – must still go through review process • Panel Sessions may be a partial session combined with paper session • October planning meeting baselined at DC but other alternatives are being considered – at major airline hub such as Chicago. Design Process Subcommittee Report • We discussed the boundaries for MBD as relates to similar activities: Model based design, model based manufacturing (MBM), model based engineering (MBE) and multidisciplinary design & analysis (MDA). The basic common tenants of MBD would seem to at least include (1) control (including release) of data (model and related data like in some cases drawings), (2) standards or agreements related to tailoring or formatting data. It was agreed that requirements and verification are linked to but not part of MBD. It was stated that most successful companies have a process for controlling data in a manual process, and there are differing ways that are being approached for going to an electronic process. One is just digitizing the manual process and another is including some process improvement activities. We addressed the differing levels of MBD and came to the conclusion that most people are not all the way into MBD (i.e. where there are no drawings). In the arena where you have a model and drawing which medium controls in the case that they do not agree. DPSC is attempting to carve out a niche that will help the community in this area. • Actions: • Ask Bill James if he will have time to put together an activity plan or mission statement with respect to where we are going with MBD. (Rowe/James) • Put together a timeline associated with plan after it is developed. (Rowe) • Solicit other companies as to where they are with MBD.
