Historical perspective of world tourism • The substantial growth of the tourism activity clearly marks tourism as one of the most remarkable economic and social phenomena of the past century. The number of international arrivals shows an evolution from a mere 25 million international arrivals in 1950 to an estimated 806 million in 2005, corresponding to an average annual growth rate of 6.5%

Conrad Hilton • Began his career in 1907 when he started working as a hotel operator to help his family face some hard times in his hometown of San Antonio, New Mexico • After WWI, Hilton bought his first hotel • By 1929, he had seven properties – but then the Great Depression hit and he lost money and was in debt- One of his bellboys had to lend him 300$ just so he could have money to eat
Conrad Hilton • During the difficult times, Hilton learned how to budget and manage his money • 1946 – established Hilton Hotels Corporation • 1949 – Hilton International in Puerto Rico
What did Hilton give to the hotel industry? • First hotel chain to insist each hotel has to prepare daily year-to-year reports summarizing financials • Set up one of the first computerized hotel reservation systems • Master at using lobby space; rented it to shop owners or a bar/restaurant • Would buy hotels that were not doing well at a cheap price and turn them into profitable properties

International Organizations A) World Tourism Organization (WTO) • Official consultative organization to the United Nations on tourism • Aim was promotion and development of tourism, with view to contribute to economic development, international understanding, world peace, prosperity and universal respect for human/fundamental rights

International Organizations B) International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) • Another consultative organization to the UN • Members are governments that have vested interest in safe, orderly growth of airways and airports • Discourages unreasonable competition between airlines and meeting the needs of the world regarding air transport
1. International Organizations C) International Air Transport Association (IATA) • Established in 1919, reorganized in 1945, created by the airlines • Responsible for much of the ease of air travel in the last 50 years • Responsible for one ticket/one trip concept
1. International Organizations D) World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) • Private organization works with governments around the world – helping them to realize the full economic impact of tourism
1. International Organizations E) Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) • Countries uniting for the benefit of the tourism sector • Encourages excellence in travel • Through promotion, research, education, development, and marketing • Represents 34 countries in the Pacific Asia area
2. Canadian Organizations and Associations A) Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) • Working partnership of tourism business and associations, provincial and territorial governments and government of Canada • Plans, directs, manages, and implements programs to generate and promote tourism in Canada

Canadian Organizations and Associations B) Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) • A national forum to facilitate human resource development activities that will support a globally competitive and sustainable Canadian tourism sector • Brings together the work of the provincial tourism education councils under a national framework
2. Canadian Organizations and Associations C) Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) • Encourage tourism in Canada • Not-for-profit industry association representing tourism-related businesses/individuals • Works with customs to improve reception of all travelers
2. Canadian Organizations and Associations D) Association of Canadian Travel Agents (ACTA) • Not-for-profit trade association – retail travel agencies, tour operators, any travel/tourism related companies
2. Canadian Organizations and Associations E) Canadian Tourism Research Institution (CTRI) • Research institution • Privately funded, extensive research
