Office Move Hazards • Accidents can happen during office moves! Here are some typical hazards you should be aware of: • Lifting of heavy objects resulting in back injuries • Over-reaching resulting in strained wrists, arms, and shoulders • Deep bending resulting in leg and back strains • Twisting resulting in back injuries • Cuts to hands and arms • Trips and falls due to clutter on the floor or standing on chairs • These hazards can be prevented!
Prepare for Your Move • Obtain cardboard totes • Label each tote with your name, new location #, and placement (desktop or floor) • Place several empty totes on the floor and load them with contents from your work station. • Sort materials into totes as you might want them organized when you unpack. • Build stacks of totes. Pack heavy items like books and file folders first. • Nest a second tote on top and pack lighter items. • Limit stacking totes to no more than three high. • Pack “ready access” items such as pens, note pads, and journals in a top tote labeled as “desktop”
Moving Totes • DO NOT LIFT LOADED TOTES. They can weigh 50 pounds or more! Just leave them for the movers to handle. • Avoid over-reaching, deep bending, and twisting motions when you lift items. • Be sure to keep aisle ways clear to prevent trip hazards • DO NOT PLACE ANY FLUIDS into the cardboard totes. Personal liquid items should be moved by the employee in a plastic bag. • DO NOT stand on chairs! • Get help from a co-worker or mover if needed.

Ergonomics • Make sure you set-up your new work station so that you are comfortable! • Adjust your monitor screen, keyboard, mouse, and chair. • Use the “Office Move Checklist” to help you set-up your area. • EH&S will perform sweeps of new areas to check and make sure work stations are adjusted properly • If you need help, submit an ergonomic evaluation request: https://ehswprod.lbl.gov/Ergo/Start.asp
Accidents • In the event that you experience an injury, it is important that you report it right away. • Report the accident immediately to your supervisor. • Call Health Services at X6266 for assistance and initiate an accident report. • If you see a hazard or experience a “near miss” incident, contact the Division Safety Manager X8137 for corrective action.
