Supporting SEN children with Mathematics. Mo Hart, Learning enhancement coordinator Horizon school, dubai
Outline of Presentation. • Overview of support for SEN at Horizon School • Using a Developmental Continuum to inform planning for children with SEN in mathematics • Common characteristics of children with learning difficulties in mathematics. • Accommodations and Modifications • Common Areas of Mathematical Difficulty.
Overview of support for SEN at Horizon School • Wave 1 – identification, differentiation, additional support in class, TAs, parent helpers, monitoring impact of intervention. • Wave 2 – Wave 1 + provision of Group EPs, ‘pull-out’ support from SENCO, SEN TA, monitoring impact of intervention. • Wave 3 – Formal external assessment (e.g. Ed Pysch) - Wave 1 + provision of IEPs, ‘pull-out’ support from SENCO, SEN TA, monitoring impact of intervention.
Using a Developmental Continuum to inform planning for children with SEN in mathematics • Identifying children with learning difficulties in mathematics. • Compare perceived competence with generally accepted developmental norms. • E.g. EYFS Profile assessment scales reference sheet • http://www.discovery-school.org/DSfinalmathdevcontin.pdf
Common characteristics of children with learning difficulties in mathematics. • Attention deficits • Processing deficits • Memory deficits • Organizational Difficulties • Motor skills difficulties • Language disorders • Reading difficulties • Visual perceptual skill deficits
Accommodations and Modifications • Accommodations – strategies to ensure that children achieve the same or similar learning outcomes to their peers • These include: • Reading questions for students • Presenting separate problems on worksheets - large print • Highlight key points / operations • More time to complete tasks / movement breaks • Talk slowly, repeat instructions and ask students to repeat them back • Deconstructing tasks • Practical Apparatus; Visual Aids; Kinesthetic activities • Breaking down tasks into ‘manageable chunks’ • Minimize distractions
Accommodations and Modifications • Modifications – changes to the learning outcomes to meet the level of the individual student • Altering the learning expectation • Simplifying a task • Reducing the task
Common Areas of Mathematical Difficulty. • Areas of arithmetic that appear to create more problems than others for children include: • Memory for arithmetical facts. (VIDEO 1) • Brainstorm & discuss possible accommodations for this difficulty.
Common Areas of Mathematical Difficulty. • Areas of arithmetic that appear to create more problems than others for children include: • Word problem solving (VIDEO) • Brainstorm & discuss possible accommodations for this difficulty
