  3. Matt. 19:1-9 • V. 1-6 • Questions from the Pharisees • Is it lawful to divorce for every cause? • Jesus said: Read Gen. 2:24

  4. Matthew 19:1 ¶ Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, that He departed from Galilee and came to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. 2. And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there. 3. ¶ The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,’ 5. and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? 6. So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Matthew 19:9 NKJV “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” Matthew 19:9 KJV “And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.”

Marriage is to last until Death “For the woman which hath a husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth;...” Rom. 7:2 “The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth;...” 1 Cor. 7:39 Mal. 2:14 “yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.” Marriage has Responsibilities

  15. Unscriptural divorce Brings about Temptation Subjects mate to temptation to yield to unlawful sexual fulfillment That person would not be without blame Jesus warned about this in Matt. 5:32 “causeth her to commit adultery”

Yes Are non-Christians Exempt? • All are accountable to God • Acts 17:30 – all commanded to repent • Rom. 1:24-32 – condemned for their sin • Matt. 14:4 “it is not lawful for you to have her” • What about? • Polygamy - Group Marriage • Homosexual marriage
