SIRCStudent Information Resource Centre • First stop for students with questions regarding academics or campus services • Distribute Student Daily News • Provides academic advising for first year and undeclared students • www.uwindsor.ca/sirc • Located in CAW Student Centre.
Health Services • On campus clinic, located in the CAW Student Centre, open Monday through Friday 9am – 5pm • Allergy shots, blood clinic • Health education classes (smoking cessation, safe sex, nutrition, counselling, etc.) • Accepts OHIP card
Campus Smoking/Tobacco Policy • Recently passed through Senate • The Policy is available online at www.uwindsor.ca/snac • Smoking is now only allowed in Designated Smoking Areas (away from buildings and doors) • A full campaign will be introduced in September
CAW Student Centre • Student Services—UWSA, Student Counselling Centre, Womyn’s Centre, Parking Services, SIRC, OPUS, pharmacy, Chiropractor/massage therapy, Mr. Copies, Half Baked Tanning, Travel Cuts, Photo Studio, Thirsty Scholar Pub, Marketplace food court • Locker rental, photocopiers, information boards • Group meeting areas, quiet study areas • Complimentary computer use
Campus Police • University of Windsor campus is very safe • Emphasis on taking precautionary measures • Patrol campus area 24 hours/day, 7 days/week • Car and Bike patrols • Highly qualified special constables • Satellite office in the Leddy library • Laptop crime prevention program
Campus Police • Bicycle registration program available online • Community safety presentations and self defense programming available • Issue crime alerts if situations arise that require a heightened alert where life or property is threatened (intended to maintain a high level of safety)
Walk Safe • Service provided 8pm – 3am • Volunteer pairs escort students within 2-block radius of campus • Professionally and medically trained personnel • Contact Number: (519) 253-3000 ext. 2416 or call “0” after hours
Emergency Phones • Any campus phone or pay phone connects immediately to campus police • Emergency call boxes with blue flashing lights located around campus. There are many emergency phones located in the parking lots.
ERTEmergency Response Team • Student organization trained in first aid, CPR, defibrillator, and oxygen administration respond to medical emergencies on campus • Staff and faculty representatives in each building trained in first aid and CPR
Fire Safety • Plan escape • Check fire alarm regularly • Use candles safely • Ensure chimney is cleaned regularly • Smoke outdoors • Check home owner’s policy about insurance • Remove clutter around stove • Do not cover lighting fixtures • Check condition of electrical cords and outlets before use • Be wary of intoxicating substances • Take fire alarms seriously • In case of fire, call fire department, exit building immediately
Campus Alcohol Policy • Guideline policy for all campus groups and organizations planning events • Encourages responsible drinking for students of legal drinking age • Explains legalities of underage drinking • Brochures available at Parent Table
Online Social Network Safety • Facebook, MySpace, Xanga, LiveJournal, Blogs • Access and maintain contact with friends all over the world (and back home) • Connections with other U of W students • Off campus students feel more connected to campus • Provides information about local events • Create their own personalized webpage
Online Social Network Safety • Posting personal information can be read by anyone • Friends, parents, profs, employers, law enforcement • Students in positions of leadership should be cautious • Inappropriate postings, photos, comments • Tarnish reputation, ruin friendships, lack of civility • Time waster • Can become addictive, interfere with studies • May provide unreliable information
