Progress Meeting on CC PA at ASIPP CC PA 1.1.P3C.CN.01 Mar. 20, 2013 Metallurgical analysis of the 3rd prototype CC He inlet samples provided by ASIPP Dawid J. Marcinek, Mateusz Ziemba supervisor: Stefano Sgobba EN-MME-MM CERN EDMS nr°1272308
Delivery and test description • ITER CC He Inlets samples delivered to CERN by ASIPP in Feb. 2012 • Two welded with buttering (B1 and B2) and two without buttering (WB1 and WB2) • One sample of each weld selected (following VT) for qualification (B1 and WB2) • Tomography based(RX Solutions /FR) selection of metallurgical cutspositions for cross-sectional destructive examinations • Classification following ISO 6520-1 and judged with respect to EN ISO 5817 - level B Marking corresponds to tomographic views: RV – rear view, SV – side view, FV – front view
XR tomography results XR tomography was performed by RX Solutions /FR,allowing to access defects in the whole weld volume with higher resolution than through computed RT. Sample B1 Video progressing from RV to FV Sample WB2 Video progressing from RV to FV
Micro-observations Metallographic investigations have been performed on carefully polished transversal cross-sections, selected on the basis of results of tomographic inspection. Due to the very fine size, the indicated cut (red line) followed by progressive polishing was not successful in visualizing these defects on cross-cuts. Gas cavity/porosity (ref: 201) acceptable to ISO 5817 level B Sample B1 FV Lack of fusion(ref: 401) unacceptable to ISO 5817 level B
Micro-observations • Tomographic observations revealed tungsten inclusions Sample WB2 RV Tungsten inclusions (ref: 6021), according to ISO 5817 level B, acceptance depends on application Sample WB2 FV
Micro-observations • Metallographic observations in transversal cross-cutin the position identified by XR tomography Lack of side wall fusion(ref: 4011) not permitted to ISO 5817 level B Sample WB2SV Excessive penetration (ref: 504) acceptable to ISO 5817 level B(h ≤ 1 mm + 0.1 b, where b is a width of weld reinforcement)
Discussion and conclusion • Based on findings of tomography, weld defects could generally be confirmed and assessed • Internal defects identified by tomography were generally confirmed • Good applicability of the technique for qualification purposes • Technique much more exhaustive than computed radiography
