Analytic and Synthetic Cubism • Analytic Cubism focused on fragmenting subjects into small facets and “analyzing” them from different angles • Works were nearly abstract and monochrome (using mainly browns and grays) • Often put letters in their paintings • Synthetic Cubism • Often made from colored paper • Cut paper pieces embodied the entire object in the art work

Candlestick and Playing Cards on a Table • Georges Braque (French, 1882–1963) • Oval: 25 5/8 x 21 3/8 in. (65.1 x 54.3 cm) • Oil on canvas • At the center can be seen the corner of a table which id on top of the round base of a brass candlestick and, at the right, two playing cards.
Artillery • Roger de La Fresnaye • 51 1/4 x 62 3/4 in. (130.2 x 159.4 cm) • Oil on canvas • Artillery officers on white and brown horses accompany an ammunition wagon for moving artillery that transports a field gun and three soldiers in helmets.
