CA Education Code 52522 • 1993, CA Legislature passed EC 52522 • Authorizes the SPI to approve adult school plans to approve up to 5 percent of their block entitlement on innovative and alternative instructional delivery • The program effectively started in 1995
The Program Expands…. • In June 2001, LAUSD requests a waiver of the 5% cap. SBE grants a waiver for LA for up to 7% • July 1, 2008, OTAN assumes Leadership Project responsibility for distance learning • On September 30, 2008 Governor Schwarzenegger signs AB 1163 authorizing up to 15%

Vallejo, ESL • Blended Advanced ESL Class • Some students need more challenges than classroom can provide • Students have continued on the site from other states and countries • Many lessons learned • about what works
Salinas, ESL • Moved ESL to online • instruction last summer • Prepared students in the • spring • Online courses over the summer • Some challenges • No students willing to try it at first • The following year, many more students were interested • Worked with F2F classes until students were comfortable • Required a minimum of computer experience • Next year…??
