4. 2007-10 Teacher Blackboard Requirements • Teachers will maintain Blackboard Courses • Announcements/Calendar with homework and due dates, quiz dates, test dates etc. • Course Documents such as handouts, information, examples, power points, worksheets etc. • Use other Blackboard Tools such as discussion board, virtual classroom • Teachers will expect students to turn in the majority of assignments electronically

Key Ingredients for Success On An Online Day • Teachers • Being Prepared (Professional Development) • Teacher In-Services • Optional Technology Sessions • Realize the benefits of technology and an online day • Students • Use technology daily for educational purposes • Online day requirements is not dramatically different than a regular day of school

7. Prior to the Online Day • Inform Teachers and Set Parameters • Send email informing and instructing teachers • Inform Students • Show power point to student population, hours before school was dismissed • Inform Parents • Send Enewsletter explaining the day to all parents/guardians

8. Online Day Instructional Activities (Class Periods are 50 or 80 minutes in length) • Regular daily quiz on blackboard • Webquests • Video on YouTube and complete discussion questions downloaded from blackboard • Students watched the recorded lesson on DyKnow and then completed problems • Discussion of required readings (Synchronous, Asynchronous)

9. Online Day Instructional Activities (Class Periods are 50 or 80 minutes in length) • Lessons recorded from Smartboard or CamStudio and downloaded to blackboard ; students could view the lesson as many times as needed. • Virtual dissections • Online study session • Web activity on global warming from textbook.

Online Day Assignment - You Decide: Does Human Activity Cause Global Warmng? • Login to the online textbook. • Click on the You Decide link in the menu on the left hand side of the screen. • Click on the link for You Decide: Does Human Activity Cause Global Warming?under Unit 7 (you can try clicking on the link here and you may not have to login to the online textbook). • Work through the activity. • Put your answer to Step 7 in a Word document and turn it in here on Blackboard. • Here is a what step 7 asks you to do: Imagine that you have been asked to advise the government on global waring. In a Word Document construct a policy on global warming that addresses these questions: • What data supports the notion that Earth is getting warmer? Is this data convincing? Are there problems with this data? How can you overcome them? • Is there a connection between global warming and carbon dioxide levels? What data supports this? Are there problems with this data? Can you devise an experiment to probe this question further? • Are humans responsible for the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels? Can you design an experiment that could test this question conclusively? • If fossil fuel combustion is not responsible for global warming, what might be? Can you devise and experiment to differentiate between potential causes?

11. Accountability • Student attendance for the online day • If assignment was turned in electronically by 8:00 am the next class day, the student attended school on the online day. If assignment was not turned in, student was absent. • Data from Blackboard • At 1:00 in afternoon of online day there were 1002 hits • Recorded hits for 3 hour period and every log in for the three hour period. • Listing of all users is available during the time period.
