NEWTON’S OTHER LAWS
I. NEWTON’S 1st LAW • Also called the law of Inertia. • Inertia is not a force • It is a property of matter • It is the tendency of an object to resist change.
B. Actual Law • An object at rest will remain at rest or an object in motion will stay in motion until a net force acts on it. • Book on table • Satellite in space • Seatbelts in cars
C. Types of Forces • Ff = force of friction • FN = normal force • Fsp = Spring Force • FT = Tension • Fg = Force of gravity (weight) • Fc = Centripetal force
II. NEWTON’S 3rd LAW • For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. • We are talking about forces here! • Ex. Space Shuttle F Shuttle F gas
EXAMPLES • Jumping out of a boat • Action – you pushing on a boat • Reaction boat pushing back on you. • 2 different object go in two different directions with the same force.
PROBLEM • A 50 kg bucket is lifted by a rope. Find the Tension. Now it is started from rest and is lifted 3.0 m and is now moving with a velocity of 3.0 m/s. If the rope breaks at 525 N, does it break? F t 1st – find net acceleration. 2nd – find net force. 3rd - draw a FBD. 4th – find Tension on rope. Fnet = Ft - Fg Fg
