Highlights from the 2008 Ontario Budget • The 2008 Ontario Budget is making major investments in skills training and infrastructure while balancing the budget and enhancing business competitiveness. • This Budget is about making sure people have jobs and Ontario’s economy grows. • This Budget is about ensuring that all Ontarians have the opportunities and skills to succeed, so that they are working in jobs that will strengthen Ontario’s economy.

  3. Skills to Jobs Action Plan Skills to Jobs Action Plan – $1.5 billion - invested over 3 years • The total amount of money identified for New Skills for New Careers is $560 million, over three years. • $475 million is designated for MTCU.

  4. Skills to Jobs Action Plan • The $475 million includes funding for: Estimated Investment (in $ millions)

Skills to Jobs Action Plan • Second Career Strategy - $355 million • The Second Career Strategy will provide long-term skills training opportunities for 20,000 unemployed workers, including financial support based on individual need. Includes Rapid Re-Employment and Training Service (RRTS) to respond to major layoffs. • Expanding Apprenticeship - $75 million • This will increase the supply of workers in critical trades that are facing shortages or high retirement rates in industries such as construction and mining.

Skills to Jobs Action Plan • Apprenticeship Enhancement Fund (AEF) - $45 million • The Apprenticeship Enhancement Fund will provide $45 million over the next three years to buy state-of-the-art equipment essential to the technical training of apprentices. • New and Expanded Skills Training Centres and Facilities - $200 million • The 2008 Budget provides $200 million for new and expanded skills training centres and facilities under the Strategic Skills Training Capital Investments program.
