Font and General Presentation • Can always use a word template: Make sure you use one that highlights your strengths. • Chronological outlines are an easy way to organize your resume • Your resume should be about one page • Use professional and readable font ( Ariel or Times New Roman) • Make sure your resume is free of grammatical, spelling and typographic errors! Have several people read over it for you! • Make sure your resume is always up to date!
Objective • A strong, descriptive objective will help your resume stand out from all the others- if you don’t get recruiter’s attention right away they will just overlook your resume • Must be professional and cater to the job you want • If you are just filling out a resume for a general purpose use something like… “To work in an instructive and challenging environment in order to strengthen my professional skills.” • Make sure it has a clear sense of direction and establishes a goal
Important Tips!! #1 • Your resume is not about your jobs or you experiences it is about YOU-make sure you explain what you did and how you did it, why this was important and highlight yourself as a team player
Important Tips!! #2 • DO NOT list hobbies on your resume- instead highlight skills you have that are marketable in the line of work you are applying for. ( i.e.: Computer Skills, Second Languages, Leadership positions)
Important Tips #3 • Make sure you focus on the achievements and results of your previous work and experiences- ACCOMPLISHMENTS are more tangible than duties
Important Tips!! #4 • Use comparisons: compare your work with your colleague or other businesses- this make your accomplishments more tangible to the reader (i.e.: Use percents and numbers to explain accomplishments)
Important Tips!! #5 • Make sure you credit the team!! (For example use phrases like… Contributed to… Aided in… Helped to… Collaborated with a department of… Participated on a committee that… Supported a.. Selected for a national team that…
Important Tips!! #6 • Be clear and concise • Use powerful descriptive nouns to describe yourself. Use action verbs to describe what you have done.
Important Tips!! #7 • Work with an advisor to figure out how you can make your resume more complete if you feel like you are lacking in experience. They will be able to better help you pull from your past experiences to highlight things that you may not even know are appropriate for resumes!
