Resume • Resume = Persuade an employer to interview you • It is the interview that will, hopefully, lead you to the job offer • Quick snapshot of who you are and what you have done • Be clear and concise! • Be uniform! • Be true! • Showcase your skills • Communicate your assets, be clear and concise • Demonstrate your written communication skills

The Best Resumes Are… • Uniquely tailored to each job you apply to • Easy to read and follow • Well-organized – headings for each section • Highlights your strengths • Entirely free of errors • Usually one page • A work in progress • Reviewed and updated every year or more • Able to support your experience and skills background • Short and concise • Those that avoid talking in first person • Do not repeat words and/or phrases

Myth vs Fact • Question: I can use the same resume for multiple position types. • Answer: If your current resume includes laboratory experience, it may not be needed for a sales position. • Your references must be listed on your resume. • References are to be on a separate document and only given when asked. • Resumes should contain your entire work history. • If you’ve held many positions, only list relevant and current jobs. • Resumes can only include paid work positions. • Resumes can, and should, contain all experiences paid or not!

Attributes that should be included on your resume • What kinds of skills, experience, and background are important to potential employers in your field and this job? • Hunt for key words and phrases that are common to the industry and the job description. • Visit professional organization websites. Get to know what skills and attributes employers are looking for in a candidate. • Communication skills (written) • Leadership • Analytical/quantitative skills • Strong work ethic • Ability to work in a team • Problem-solving skills • Communication skills (verbal) • Initiative • Detail-oriented • Computer skills
