The New Subaru Outback Shines as Pro Cycling Support Car The pro cycling international tour recently began the 2017 season as the Tour Down Under opened. This six day event is based in and around Adelaide and showcases the colourful action and speed of the pro cycling world. This event has grown from a small handful of riders from overseas to one of the world’s premier races with world champs arriving to start their new season. While most eyes are on the bikes, these races can last for hours, days or weeks, which means that support vehicles need to meet gruelling demands. Fortunately, the new Impreza is on site to keep things moving smoothly. The Demands of a Support Vehicle: Cars and support vehicles have been a part of professional cycling events since the 1970s. They serve several functions including medical intervention, team support, media transfer and transport for race referees. The 2017 Tour Down Under is playing host to over 200 vehicles including team buses, police bikes, and police cars. However, to fans, the most visible vehicles are the team support vehicles. These tend to be covered in racing colours with bike racks and spare wheels covering almost every available surface. They barge their way behind the riders honking to ensure that the race teams have everything they need. Subaru Support Vehicles: The majority of the 2017 fleet of support vehicles was supplied by Subaru Australia. The company prepared 106 vehicles including the new Subaru Outback, especially for the event. Team University South Australia, is one of the smallest teams in the race and is using one of the new Outbacks. According to Bradley McGee former stage winner at the Tour de France, the Outback has become the team’s mobile office. There is a custom roof rack which holds as many as ten bikes and ten spare wheels, which can be pulled off the vehicle as soon as they are needed. The model is also fitted with a two way radio to allow McGee with his team of riders. The team can pull back to the vehicle to get food or a drink or make repairs at any stage. The team mechanic is also on board with a mobile tool workshop to keep the riders in the race. While they may suffer a few bumps and scrapes, the white vehicles are sure to raise Subaru’s profile and could boost Subaru Outback car sales in the coming months.
