Christians in Wonderland Answering THE CALL in a topsy-turvy world
Having a Wall to Climb • No Love for our Neighbors • Disregard for those who are poor • A disdain for the environment • Legally sanctions setbacks for minorities and the LGBTQ community • Lack of accountability
How do we keep climbing? • Colossians 3:12 - Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Compassion for the “Other” • Mark 2: 1-5 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Compassion for the “Other” • How did we lose our compassion in the Church? Have you ever heard the argument about victims of police shootings contributing to their own deaths? I have…from Christians
Compassion for the “Other” • Where is the public sacrifice from the Church? Some are, but they are a small voice (CCDA protest) compared to those that lack compassion or even perpetuate the problems
Kindness: “BE NICE” • If you get overwhelmed with the notion of sacrifice, just BE NICE
Radical Humility • Why did Jesus wash his disciples’ feet?
Gentleness • Philippians 4:5 - Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
Patience • Ecclesiastes 7:8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride. • Being more than a conqueror – so concerned about being right or wrong that we lose the point (ex. CNN)
What Do we Do? • Finding your way in Wonderland feels like catching a ghost with your bare hands. • “Get her!” (Ghostbusters) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYjFKsJjCP0
What do we do? • Develop your passion – “Get fired up, baby!!!” • Do your homework – ex. Building a Bridge by James Martin • Create a plan – If you fail to plan, you plan to fail • Utilize resources effectively – being good stewards, finding the better strategy (climbing the wall) • Team up – no one does it alone • Learn, Unlearn, Relearn – most challenging is to unlearn
Jesus in Wonderland • I wonder if Jesus felt like Alice • I wonder if he knew which direction to take and when to take it • I wonder if Jesus was able to make any sense of the world around him • He prayed, he helped, he sacrificed, he rose
