  2. This preview will- • Explain the Survey process • Teach you how to setup the Survey • Show you how to preview the textbook • Show you how to find topic sentences Credit- Robert Aukerman1949 Aukerman Survey

  3. Robert Aukerman (1942) was the first person to come up with idea for showing people how to improve their reading comprehension skills from technical manuals. Aukerman SurveyHistory Aukerman came up with the idea because he noticed that people were having difficulty reading scientific and technical manuals.

  4. Think about this, when you read a novel, newspaper, comic book, or other type of reading material, you don’t read to memorize the material. You read for the enjoyment of reading. When reading for enjoyment, you start at the beginning of a book and read through to the end of the book. You don’t usually find people who like to read technical manuals for fun. This is why the Survey Process is important to learn. It will help you to maximize your study potential, which will give you more time to do the things that you like to do. Also, it will help you improve your test taking skills.

  5. Steps- 1. Quickly scan the pages of the textbook. Familiarize yourself with how the words, paragraphs, pictures, highlighted words, glossary, and index are laid out in the book. 2. Look at every picture and read the captions. 3. Scan each paragraph for Topic Sentences. Setting up the Survey Goal- To be able to quickly identify the TOPIC Sentences within each paragraph. Right now, you might be asking yourself, “What is a Topic Sentence?”

  6. A topic sentence is a sentence that contains the Author’s main idea. An idea or TOPIC that the author is trying to share with the reader. Topic sentences may not be found in every paragraph. Paragraphs without topic sentences usually support the paragraph that contains the topic sentence. The goal of the “survey process” is to leave out the rhetoric of textbooks; leaving only the important parts of the context. The next slide is an example of a paragraph out of a scientific text book. Lets see if you can identify a topic sentence within a paragraph. The Survey Process

  7. Biology literally means "the study of life". Biology is such a broad field, covering the minute workings of chemical machines inside our cells, to broad scale concepts of ecosystems and global climate change. Biologists study intimate details of the human brain, the composition of our genes, and even the functioning of our reproductive system. Biologists recently all but completed the deciphering of the human genome, the sequence of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) bases that may determine much of our innate capabilities and predispositions to certain forms of behavior and illnesses. DNA sequences have played major roles in criminal cases (O.J. Simpson, as well as the reversal of death penalties for many wrongfully convicted individuals). We are bombarded with headlines about possible health risks from favorite foods (Chinese, Mexican, hamburgers, etc.) as well as the potential benefits of eating other foods such as cooked tomatoes. Informercials tout the benefits of metabolism-adjusting drugs for weight loss. Many Americans are turning to herbal remedies to ease arthritis pain, improve memory, as well as improve our moods. Can a biology book give you the answers to these questions? No, but it will enable you learn how to sift through the biases of investigators, the press, and others in a quest to critically evaluate the question. To be honest, five years after you are through with this class it is doubtful you would remember all the details of meatbolism. However, you will know where to look and maybe a little about the process of science that will allow you to make an informed decision. Will you be a scientist? Yes, in a way. You may not be formally trained as a science major, but you can think critically, solve problems, and have some idea about what science can and cannot do. I hope you will be able to tell the shoe from the shinola. Find the Topic Sentence(s) within these paragraphs.

I hope you will be able to tell the shoe from the shinola. Find the Topic Sentence(s) within these paragraphs. This is an easy one, the Topic Sentence in this paragraph just happens to be the first sentence in the paragraph. Also, the word is highlighted/bold. A highlighted/bold word usually indicates that this word is found in the glossary. Be careful, just because the word is highlighted/bold, it may not be the topic sentence. It may only support the topic sentence found in another paragraph. A topic sentence may also be found anywhere in the paragraph and is usually not in the first sentence of the paragraph.

I hope you will be able to tell the shoe from the shinola. Find the Topic Sentences within these paragraphs. It is also important to understand that all paragraphs don’t have topic sentences. However, these paragraphs will support a paragraph with a topic sentence. You may have 2, 3, 4, or more paragraphs supporting one topic sentence. Because of this, you will need to include some of the information found within these supporting paragraphs within your survey.

  10. This is an example of a Survey. Notice the layout of this survey. Take a minute to look at the Topics and their corresponding definitions.

  11. This is an example of a Survey. Notice the layout of this survey. • The Left Side of the page is used for- • Lecture notes that the teacher/instructor gives you during class discussion. • Also, use this area for clarification of the topic. This is a SPLIT page. Notice how the page is divided into two sides.

  12. This is an example of a Survey. Notice the layout of this survey. • The Right Side of the page is used for- • Topics that you write when you are surveying the textbook. • This should be completed prior to classroom discussion. This is a SPLIT page. Notice how the page is divided into two sides.

  13. This is an example of a Survey. Look at each of the Topics on this page. They were taken from Topic Sentences found in paragraphs from a Scientific Text Book. Notice how they are laid out on this page. You should write neatly and use small letters. This is to maximize the information that you can put on one page.

  14. This is an example of a Survey. • Notice the top of the page. It should include- • Title • Survey Page Numbers • Page Number • Two Lines Between Each Topic

  15. Remember that neatness is important. If your survey work is lacking or incomplete, I will ask you to completely redo the survey. This is why it is important to ask questions. If you do not understand something about the survey process, please ask. Your ability to successfully complete a survey will be a big part of your grade. Conclusion
