Improving Contractor Safety Performance 20th Annual Safety Excellence Award Program Safety, Health & Environmental Committee
Award Process • Nominations by Owners (Nov-Dec) • Training of Nominees and Audit Volunteers (Jan) • Mentors (previous year “Best-in-Category” Contractors) assist nominees through process • Nominees submit documentation to HBR for Evaluation and Finalists Selected by Owners and Mentors (Feb) • Site Audits of Finalists conducted (Mar) • Category Awards identified (Bronze, Silver, Gold & Best-in-Category) • Awards Banquet recognition (May) • Best Practices Seminar (Jun)
Selection of Finalists • 99 Work Sites for 69 Contractor Companies Nominated for 2007 Awards. 53 Companies submitted information for evaluation. • Each Company’s U.S. data for 2006 evaluated (Fatalities, LWD’s, Recordables) • Safety Policies/Procedures Reviewed • Twenty-six Finalists selected, three or four in each of seven Categories; • General Contractors – Large, Medium & Small • Specialty – Hard Crafts • Specialty – Soft Crafts – Large & Small • Technical Support
Site Audits of Finalists • Site Safety Programs reviewed • Emphasis on Employee interviews to determine if policies/procedures understood and implemented • Over 100 specific safety, health and environmental elements rated • Look for “best practices” that improve safety results and distinguish Contractor from others • Audit Teams: 7 to 10 owner and contractor volunteers, led by owner, co-led by Mentor
Benefits • Contractors are recognized with awards but sharing best practices is the real purpose • Safety Audits are good training experiences for new safety supervisors and other maintenance and construction leaders • Audit volunteers can take “best practices” they observe back to their work places • “Best-in-Category” Contractors must share their best practices at the annual seminar and as Mentors the following year. • All Nominees and Volunteers are recognized and challenged to improve their safety processes • Participating Contractors have the best safety performance results in the “world” and HBR has the data to prove it.
Important Dates to Remember • May 11 – Awards Banquet at Galveston Convention Center • June 21 – Best Practices Seminar at Pasadena Convention Center. Part of all day Safety Expo sponsored by HBR, ABC, Houston Area Safety Council and OSHA • Safety, Health & Environmental Resource Committee meets on the third Thursday of every month at 8:00 a.m., normally at the HBR Office
