  2. Where does classroom management fit ? Classroom Management Instructional Tactics and Strategies Knowledge of how people learn Instructional Skills Content

  3. BUMP 1 Bump 1 – Preventing and Responding to Misbehaviour through low-key responses Teacher responds to the student using one of several low-key responses. Responses should be short or shorter than the interruption and should maintain a positive or neutral atmosphere. These responses are non-assertive and invite the student to behave. These responses include: proximity, touch, gesture, using the student’s name, the look, a pause, ignoring the behaviour, a signal to begin/for attention, and dealing the problem not the student.

  4. More assertive than bump 1 and it demands the student to behave. • 4 steps: • Stop talking (pause) • Turn toward the student (square off) • Give a verbal request to stop (optional) • End with a thank you • Sometimes the length/intensity of the look will stop the behaviour without saying anything • Caution – if the look is too long/intense, it may work against you and initiate a power struggle BUMP 2 – Squaring Off

  5. Teacher uses this skill to give options to the student or have students come up with their own option to prevent an inappropriate behaviour to continue • Makes the student talk the responsibility • 4 steps: • Stop teaching, pause, and turn to student • Provide student with an appropriate choice or allow them to make a choice by saying “A decision please” • Wait for an answer • Finish with a thank you BUMP 3 - Choices

  6. Pull your finger out….. • Participants stand in community circle • Holds their left hand and the index finger on their right hand into the flat hand of the person next to them • When facilitator calls ‘Pull’ the index finger needs to try to pull up before the flat hand grabs them Used for a bit of fun and motivation

  7. BALL PASS • Can be used as a revision for Name Wave • Students throw balls across community circle saying students name passing to • Students need to remember who throws to them as you can also reverse this for memory

  8. SNOWBALL • Give everyone the topic • Have them write their response on a piece of paper and then scrunch it up • Have them all throw the paper into a box in the middle at the same time 1, 2, 3 Snowball • Have each person collect a piece of paper from the box • Have each person read the response on their piece of paper one at a time to the group
