What does your child need? To be prepared for school each day, your child should bring: • A sharp pencil. • Homework folders. • A snack and water bottle with your child’s name on it. • Plain black indoor shoes with your child’s name on. • A P.E kit (Gym shoes, black shorts and a white T-shirt) with names on all items.
How you can help • Please ensure your child is organised for their day at school. Full school uniformshould be worn at all times. • In order to maintain a positive partnership between parents and school, we would ask that you give your child the support that they need to complete school tasks in the allocated time and to the best of their ability. • When you are completely satisfied with the content and standard of your child’s work, please sign their homework jotter and reading record. • Please remind your children to share letters and correspondence from school regularly.

Free time Friday • 30 minutes of free time at the end of each week which links to our School Behaviour policy. • Warning given, 5 minutes loss of Free Time Friday, time out in class, time out in another class, senior management. • Record kept and children reflect on what they can do to improve their behaviour. Record sheet sent home for parents to sign.
A Curriculum for Excellence At Mid Calder, we fully embrace Curriculum for Excellence. The purpose of Curriculum for Excellence is to enable each young person to become Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors. The experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence are achievable at five levels. Primary 2/3 and Primary 3 will be usually be working at first level of the curriculum.
So far... • Building our class community and getting to know each other. • Class charter to set expectations. • Completed a mini-topic on Flat Stanley. • Begun our Egyptians IDL context. • Started to form routines and groupings.
A typical day in P2/3 and P3 The weekly timetable is designed so that children experience aspects of different areas of the curriculum each day.
LITERACY AND LANGUAGES Term 1 focus P2/3 • Writing: Descriptive writing. • Grammar: Nouns, adjectives and alphabetical order. • Reading:Jolly Phonics, Dandelion launchers/readers, Oxford Reading Tree and other reading resources. Guided reading, paired reading and reading buddies. Activities and games. Term 1 focus P3 • Writing: Descriptive writing. • Grammar: Nouns, adjectives, alphabetical order and speech marks. • Reading:Jolly Phonics, Oxford Reading Tree and other reading resources. Guided reading, paired reading and reciprocal reading. Activities and games
MATHs AND NUMERACY Term 1 focus P2/3 • Numeracy: SEAL number strategies • Mathematics: Measure – length an height Term 1 focus P3 • Numeracy: Number strategies and place value • Mathematics: Time
Interdisciplinary learning Term 1 focus: The Egyptians • Social Studies: Daily lives, Pharaohs and Gods, Pyramids, The River Nile, Important people, Hieroglyphics • Art/Technologies: Jewellery, Mask-making, Pyramids, Hieroglyphics • Writing: Tutankhamun, Pharaohs and Gods fact files.
Homework P2/3 and P3 homework folders should include: -Reading record -Reading book -Tricky word list keyring -Homework jotter with literacy and numeracy grids -SUMDOG password card Homework folders should be brought in every day to school with your child’s reading book inside. **Please note that reading records will not be read everyday. Ensure important notes/messages are passed to a member of staff.**
Spelling Homework Each week your child will receive a list of words (stapled or glued into jotters) that they can use to complete one literacy task from their grid in their homework jotters. These lists will links to the sounds they have covered in class.
Tricky Words Keyrings Your child’s tricky work keyring will build up a list of tricky words that they will gradually cover over the term in class. Please practise the tricky words provided on a regular basis with your child to increase their word recognition and fluency when reading. When we start to explore a new set of tricky words in class, the next set will be added to their tricky word keyring. It is important to revise all tricky words on a regular basis. If you want to challenge your child further they could practise writing these words too!
Supporting at home Spelling • Practise reading and writing spelling words daily. • Checking your child understands the meaning of their words. Encourage the use of a dictionary if unsure. • Make flash cards.
Numeracy Homework Each week your child can pick one task to complete from their numeracy grid in their homework jotters.
Supporting at home Maths • Regular practise of FWNS and BWNS, finding the number before and after a given number. • Number bonds to 10 and 20 and beyond. • Experience of maths in real life contexts (e.g. handling money, exploring shapes indoors and outdoors, using clock to tell the time). • Opportunities if possible to use Sumdog.
Reading Homework Each week your child will be given one book to take home to read. • Look at and discuss the front cover, back cover, spine, blurb, author and illustrator. • Look at the pictures and talk about them together. • Stop at different parts and predict what will happen next. Also discuss the sequence of the story (Beginning, Middle, End or First, Next, Then, Last). • Look at sentence structure (capital letters, full stops, finger spaces etc.) • Look for known tricky words and sounds (Your child may begin to attempt to blend sounds together to read simple words). • Try to relate the themes in the book to your child’s own experiences. • Also allow time for your child to explore the book independently after reading it together.
Homework - Other • Your child can also use Sumdog at home to support numeracy and maths skills. • Occasionally, they may also have additional tasks related to their class topic. • Other than daily reading, homework is not compulsory and if you feel you do not want your children to receive these additional homework tasks please let the class teacher know in writing.
