  3. Petrarchan Sonnets • 14 line poem divided into two parts: • Octave (First eight lines) • Sestet (Last six lines) • Rhyme scheme: • Octave = abbaabba • Sestet = cdecde OR cdcdcd • Layout: • The octave typically introduces the theme or problem. • The sestet provides resolution for the poem.

  4. Shakespearean Sonnets • Structure: • Three four-line stanzas (called quatrains) • Final couplet • Composed in iambic pentameter • Rhyme scheme = abab, cdc, efef, gg • Themes: • Passage of time • Love • Beauty • Mortality
