  3. PTH Test • A parathyroid hormone (PTH) blood test measures the level of parathyroid hormone in the blood. • Find the cause of an abnormal blood calcium level. • High or low PTH levels can cause problems with the kidneys and bones and cause changes in calcium and vitamin D levels.

  4. Malnutrition • Malnutrition is defined as the lack of sufficient nutrients, which are essential for the body’s normal functioning. • Malnutrition during pregnancy is a leading cause for poor pregnancy consequences.

  5. Effects of Malnutrition during Pregnancy • The nutrients and trace minerals essential for developing a whole life are not provided in sufficient amounts. • The baby will exhibit poor growth rate and low weight. • The general effects of malnutrition on the body are weak immune system, greater risk to illnesses, low stamina level and lesser height.

  6. Continuation • Some effects of malnutrition during pregnancy are carried by the child throughout his/her entire life. • Also, low IQ is directly linked to malnutrition symptoms, especially during pregnancy and infancy period. • It increases the risk for mortality of mother and baby at childbirth.

  7. Symptoms • Symptoms vary and depend on what is causing the malnutrition. • Some general symptoms include: • fatigue • dizziness • weight loss.

  8. Exams and Tests • Testing depends on the specific disorder. • Most work-ups include nutritional assessments and blood work.

  9. Treatment • Treatment usually consists of replacing missing nutrients, treating symptoms as needed, and treating any underlying medical condition.

  10. Prognosis • Most nutritional deficiencies can be corrected. However, if malnutrition is caused by a medical condition, that illness has to be treated in order to reverse the nutritional deficiency. • If untreated, malnutrition can lead to mental or physical disability, illness, and possibly death.
