Course Aims By the end of this course candidates should be able to: • Deliver Bikeability Scotland training • Levels 1 & 2.
Session 1Course introduction and overview of Bikeability Scotland Levels 1 & 2 By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • Describe the theory and practical aspects of Levels 1 & 2 • State personal goals for the course • State the expected outcomes for the course • State the purpose of the Cycling Scotland trainer resources for Levels 1 & 2.
Session 2Preparing for the Level 1 Controlled Area Activity By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • Explain how to carry out a bike safety check • Make minor adjustments to make the bike safe to use • Demonstrate how to fit a helmet correctly • Identify inappropriate clothing for cycling and remedial action • Describe the impact of high visibility clothing on a cycle training session • Translate Level 1 prompt cards session 1 as a guideline.
Session 3Level 1 Practical Lesson-Braking By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • State which hand operates which brake • Describe which is the most effective brake • Brake safely and in control • Use Level 1, Session 4 to deliver a braking session • Apply the same methodology to deliver other Bikeability Level 1 Sessions.
Session 4Level 1, Practical Session delivery • By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • Use the Level 1 Trainer’s Guide and Prompt Cards to deliver Sessions
Session 5Preparation for the Level 2, On-road Activity By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • Risk assess a junction • Identify the main safely considerations relating to a cycle training session • Describe the differences between generic, specific and dynamic risk assessments • Employ safe group management strategies and supervision ratios • Describe the basic safety strategy of “Look, Signal, Two hands on, Lifesaver, manoeuvre”.
Session 6Level 2 Manoeuvres:- Start & stop, left and right turns at controlled and uncontrolled junctions, overtaking a parked car By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • Recall the core manoeuvres • Employ safe group management strategies • Relate the activities to the Level 2 trainer’s Guide and Prompt Cards • Use the Prompt Cards to deliver other Level 2 lessons.
Session 7Practical Session delivery By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • Use the Level 2 resources to prepare, conduct and evaluate a session • Compare performance to standard required in the Level 2 resources • Close a session and review it with candidates.
Session 8Programme and Lesson Preparation By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • Explain the benefits of programme/lesson planning • Explain the key points for programme/lesson planning • Identify the main safety considerations relating to a cycle training session.
Session 9Next Steps/Course review By the end of this session candidates will be able to: • Review the course in terms of effectiveness • Identify any areas of personal development • Describe the part they will play in the delivery of Bikeability Scotland( including assessments and test details) and know who to contact for support.
