  1. What is the design process? The design process consists of a list of steps that you have to follow when you encounter a design problem. The design process moves from problem to final solution. Design Art I grade 10The design process

  2. Step 1: Problem or Brief Step 2: Specifications Design Art I grade 10The design process Step 3: Research and Ideation Step 4: Best Idea Step 5: Develop and Research Step 6: Making Step 7: Evaluation Step 8: Exhibition

  3. Step 1: Problem or Brief The design brief is usually given to you as a set of instructions to do a task. It will usually include a list of specifications and an assessment rubric. Sometimes, when there is no specific brief or list of specifications given, a designer is responding to a problem or need. For example: A designer at an advertising agency is given a specific brief when producing a print ad for a client. This will tell them exactly what needs to be included, the colours / fonts / pictures they may use, specific layout instructions and advert size. An architect may not be given a brief but rather be asked to address a problem, such as finding a way to provide power to a building by harnessing natural energy (wind, solar, water). A designer might also be asked to address a problem for a client, such as designing a promotional item that advertises the client’s company but is also useful to the people they give it to. . 4. Step 2: Specifications or Limitations Clear, unambiguous specifications should be written to define the parameters of the design task. The list may include the following: Size Function Colour scheme Materials Form and shape Scale Texture Intention/use/application This list is meant to guide the designer in the ideation and development phase and can/should be compiled by the designer themselves. 5. Step 3: Research and Ideation This step is your first research phase in which you explore ideas and inspiration. This phase involves drawing sketches of initial ideas that you have for the solution to the design brief. You should be drawing as many different ideas as possible and its often a good idea to number them to show sequence. You may also want to explain some of the sketches better by adding notes to each sketch (This will guide the assessment process). DO NOT DISCARD ANY ROUGH WORK / SKETCHES, even if you do not end up using them. It is important to show how an idea developed and where your inspiration came from. It is also valuable to see that you have refined your idea and not just gone with your first draft. Design Art I grade 10The design process

  10. Step 4: Selection of the BEST IDEA This stage is important because you are choosing an idea It may be made up from several sections of ideas put together. You will begin developing this idea further. The selected idea should be clearly shown and reasons for this selection must be provided. Design Art I grade 10The design process

  11. Step 5: Development and 2nd Research This is a vitally important phase which involves making sketches of the chosen idea to do the following: Break down the idea into smaller sections in order to work on each part of the idea in detail Provide possible alternatives to each of these sections using both your imagination (shapes, forms, colours, texture etc.) and research ability e.g. into materials and joining techniques, if appropriate. Make many sketches to be thorough and to show your thinking Also add notes to these sketches to show your thinking more clearly. Consider details carefully – e.g. how will I make this part of the design? Make a FINAL, neat drawing which includes measurements (dimensions) to enable you and anyone else who is to help you, to understand exactly what you want to make. 16. Step 6: Making This is the time when you construct/assemble/make your product/design. The skills you will need for this phase will be gradually taught to you. You will have to consider carefully your time management and safe practice. Design Art I grade 10The design process

  17. Step 7: Evaluation Although evaluation is an on-going thing that takes place every step of the way, there is also a time when you and your teachers look closely at what you have done and measure the success of your work against the design brief that you were given to do. This is a process involving reason and comparison/measuring and is done to ensure that you have complied with all the requirements of the task in the best possible way. A checklist may be used here to good effect. Design Art I grade 10The design process

  18. Step 7: Exhibition This is the time where you get a chance to show your designs off in public. In business it is known as the beginning of the MARKETING PHASE. It is important to develop your own individuality here. Design Art I grade 10The design process
