  1. S. E. Hinton Susan Eloise Hinton was born in 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma She published her first book when she was only 17 years old

  2. Background Continued • Hinton wrote the first draft of The Outsiders, her first book when she was only 15 • She published the book when she was 17 with the author as S. E. Hinton because people would assume it was a male author that way • All of her stories are set in Tulsa, OK • Her books deal with teenage problems: poverty, rejection, violence, alcohol and drug abuse • Although her youthful characters often reject authority, they always have a sense of hope in her novels • The publishing of the outsiders allowed her to attend the University of Tulsa where she earned her degree in education

  3. Hinton’s Influence • "I started reading about the same time everyone else did, and began to write a short time later. • The major influence on my writing has been my reading. I read everything, including Comet cans and coffee labels. Reading taught me sentence structure, paragraphing, how to build a chapter. Strangely enough, it never taught me spelling.”

The 1960’s & Social Upheaval • “The Outsiders was published in 1967, a restless time in the United States when teenagers were outspoken and rebellious. • They hated the Vietnam War and the establishment that caused it to continue. • They resented the fact that young people from minorities and underprivileged backgrounds were not given opportunities to succeed. • To voice their dissatisfaction, they had sit-ins and protests: many became hippies, and others turned to drugs.”
