Saving the Dying Dead Sea Lexia Chadwick 22 April 2014
The Uniqueness of the Dead Sea • Lowest Point on earth at 427 meters below sea level • Density of 1.24 kg/L • which is significantly greater than the density of water found in the ocean • Makes Flotation easy • 8.6 times saltier than the ocean
Major Sink Holes are being created • More than 1,000 over last 15 years • Collapse without warning and almost always deadly if fallen into • Sink holes have already damaged infrastructure
The most prominent Solution is Red-Dead Project • Will build a series of pipelines, canals, tunnels, and desalination plants that would bring water about 180 km from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea • Requires cooperation between Israeli, Palestinian, and Jordanian authorities • Concerns about project’s true purpose- aiding the the Jordanian water shortage?
Can the Dead Sea be saved? Only time will tell. Thank you for your time!
