BACKGROUND • Viral upper respiratory influenza-like illnesses (ILI) predispose to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) • Use of heptavalent pneumococcal vaccine (PCV7) should reduce incidence of IPD
OBJECTIVE • To determine if the observed decrease in IPD following the use of PCV7 vaccine is partially due to variations in the rate of Influenza-like illness
METHODS • Determine and compare rates of IPD and ILI • 2 years before routine PCV 7 use (7/98 - 6/00) • during routine PCV7 use (7/00 - 6/03)
CALCULATIONS • Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) Rate • Cases/season IPD in 7 hospitals in a single health care system • Emergency Department (ED) Visits • Visits/season in the 7 hospital system • Influenza-like Illness (ILI) Incidence • Reports from all 13 hospitals in county where most of the system hospitals are • reports from all schools in same county
ANALYSES • 634 IPD cases identified in the 7 hospitals in a health care system in the 5 year period 1998 - 2003 • 67% IPD cases occurred during the influenza season (November - April) • Rates of IPD episodes (cases/105 ED visits) compared before vs during PCV7 years • ILI reports compared before vs during PCV7 years

CONCLUSION • Milder ILI seasons during the PCV7 period may have contributed to the reduction in IPD rates
