About HEALS • Founded October, 1998 • Opened first clinic January, 1999 • 5 medical clinics and a dental clinic • Currently serving over 7,600 children in Madison County • Over 43,000 encounters as of May 2006 • Provided $1,030,000 in dental services • Volunteers have contributed over 38,500 hours • Majority of funds go to Direct Services • (2004 IRS Form 990: 13.5% administrative costs)

  9. Third Party Reimbursement • Medicaid • Alabama law states must have a dentist on site • Cannot reimburse for hygienist if no dentist on site • Accounts for 31% of HEALS’ dental income • BCBS/AllKids • Currently 5% of total budget. This will increase as we see students from New Hope.

Developing Business Partnerships as Funding Sources • Pledge program allows financial support from local dentists • Support from school system (21st Century Grant, At-risk Funds) • Local hospital support through Healthy Community Foundation (this is our 6th year of continuous funding) • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation • Local business support (Boeing, CAS) • Accounts for 65% of HEALS’ dental income

  12. Barriers We Had Before Caring For Kids Grant • Finding a dentist who would work for what we could afford to pay them • Finding transportation for students from other schools • Limited space • Offering Orthodontics

  13. Impact of Caring For Kids Grant • Allowed us to find a solution to the problem of needing a dentist on-site • Helped solve our transportation issue • Opened our referral system to all students in Madison County • Benefits of the visits from the CFK representative
