Birmingham Students & Selectives • A Selective is a three week opportunity to experience a possible career field • When entering your options in order of importance, list at least 5 Selective courses • The Selective is assigned with Psychiatry, either P/S or S/P depending on course limits • The system looks at your options list, but does not allow a time entry • This is a graduation requirement for B’ham
How to Plan - • Preferable to schedule a possible career goal in the middle of the year • Preferable to start the year with a rotation low on your possible career goal list • Know of a time you need to be “OFF” ? – . WISH requires scheduling the entire year . Drop / Add follows receipt of WISH results
WISH Computer - • Use UASOM login and password • Any windows based PC running Internet Explorer with an Internet connection • Cannot use MacIntosh – not compatible WISH - • Select a specific block • Select one clerkship & one alternative Protection – A request about a course you do not want scheduled during a specific block
WISHrecognizes & updates entries until the program deadline Randomizationis not affected by entry date 1st WISHassignment • Attempts “preferred” clerkship • If not available, ”alternative” attempted • If both unavailable, no assignment • A random assignment will be made after all WISH entries are assigned • Clerkships: MUST MEET MINIMUM & MAXIMUM DEPARTMENT LIMITS
Randomizations Round One Assignmentplaces you in 1 of 3 groups • 1st wish primary = 30 • Alternate = 20 • No assignment = 0 • 0 points group placed at top of list • 20 points group • 30 points
Randomizations - CONTINUED Round Two WISH randomizes groups 2nd wish primary = 20 Alternate = 13 No assignment = 0 Round ThreeProcess repeated 3rd wish primary = 10 Alternate = 7 No assignment = 0
After the third round (last “WISH”) Protection request observed (if possible)Student is now scheduled in 0 to 3 clerkships After the completion of WISH Program: All 6 clerkships should be assigned * Students who did not enter WISH are randomly assigned based on availability
Key Points Everyone needs to enter WISHotherwise your assignments are determined by departmental limits and classmates’ entries Last entry is recognized by WISH, before that make as many changes as you want MIMINUM & MAXIMUM COURSE LIMITSmust be observed to benefit the student, the Attending and Patient
Do not try to out-think WISH – It can’t be done! WISHentry is ranked by importance to you Remember – All rotations,regardless of when taken,provide good training
DROP/ADD Rosters on the web after randomization: • Initial rosters are neverupdated • You choose if the roster states your name or “student” • A “swap” requires both students’ request • All changes must be processed by scheduler • requests sent to braswell@uab.edu
