The Greatest Educational Thinker of the 20th Century • ( 1920's / 1930's) He believed the authoritarian, strict, pre-ordained knowledge approach of modern traditional education was too concerned with delivering knowledge, and not enough with understanding students' actual experiences
Students need educational experiences which enable them to become valued, equal, and responsible members of society. Learning needs a structure and order, and must be based on a clear theory of experience, not simply the whim of teachers or students. The Modern Father of Experiential Education
Influence on Early Literacy • Themed units to connect learning to meaning and purpose • Pre-school classrooms should be set up to reflect content-rich activities (centers) and • Past experiences interact with the present situation, to create the student’s present experience • Teachers must try to understand students’ past experiences to better enable them to provide quality education which is relevant and meaningful for the students (individualized learning)
