Waste management: A REAL issue!! • In 2004, skip bins put in place for waste management and disposal • Households had to contribute weekly towards maintaining these skip bins in the community • A 2005 survey showed: bins were used for household rubbish. Pictures Source: Kawabata, Y (2007)

2009: Waste management still an issue • Recent community profiling indicated that waste management and proper disposal is still a problem • Types of waste: aluminum & tin cans; glass bottles and jars; plastic bottles & bags and household organic waste • Very little knowledge on the effects of inappropriate waste disposal on community health • 12% have some idea of what recycling is
Learning Objectives • At end of this presentation, the viewer will • Understand why managing rubbish/waste is important • Know the basic difference between: reduce, reuse & recycle • Be familiar with the exiting waste management & recycling services in Suva • Design a mini-project for their own sections of the community
Why manage our rubbish? • Why is it important to manage the waste or rubbish in this community? • To reduce diseases such as leptospirosis • To minimize mosquito-breeding sites • To reduce air and water pollution
How can we manage our rubbish? • How can we collectively manage our rubbish or waste here in Wailea? • Reduce: only take what you need • Reuse: e.g. reuse your plastic containers • Recycle:collecting recyclable materials and making something new
Waste Management - Recycling • Is the “act of processing used materials into new products” • in order to prevent waste of useful materials • to reduce consumption of fresh raw materials • to reduce pollution Wikipedia. What sorts of things can be recycled? • Most of the materials found around this settlement can be recycled: • Plastics: bottles, containers, toys, bags • Glass: bottles, dishes, jars • Assorted metals: copper, aluminium, brass, steel, engine parts • Others: batteries, old TV’s, car parts etc
Benefits of Recycling • Prevent waste of useful materials • Reduce consumption of fresh raw materials • Reduce pollution • In all this: your rubbish can earn money for you Wikipedia. Recycling. Retrieved on April, 30, 2009 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recycling
