Facts about STDs • STDs = Sexually Transmitted Diseases • Acquired thru intimate sexual contact (vaginal, anal or oral sex) with infected person • Very contagious diseases • Not acquired from hugging
Symptoms of STDs • May not have any! • Burning when urinating • Discharge from genitals • Sores, bumps, blisters in genital area • Itching in or around genitals • Bleeding or cramps (between periods)
Not all STDshave sores that can be seen! It make take YEARS for symptoms to appear! If you’re sexually active , you’re at risk!
Examples of STDs • Gonorrhea • Chlamydia • HIV and AIDS • Syphilis • Genital Herpes • Genital Warts
Gonorrhea (“Clap”) Signs & Symptoms: • Discharge from genitals • Burning or pain with urination • Lower abdomen pain • Bleeding between periods • Swollen Bartholin’s Gland • Fever (late in disease)
Gonorrhea (“Clap”) Complications: • Infertility • Urinary obstruction • Pharyngitis • Eye infection • Arthritis • Congestive Heart Failure • DEATH!

Chlamydia Signs & Symptoms: • Sometimes none • Testicular or abdominal pain • Painful urination • Pain, burning or itching of genitals • Discharge from genitals • Swollen Bartholin’s Gland • Fever (late in disease)
Chlamydia Complications: • Infertility • Eye infection • Arthritis • Liver problems • Heart problems • DEATH to fetus during pregnancy!

Syphilis Signs & Symptoms: • Painless chancre (ulcer) • Skin rash (hands & feet) • Multiple warty ulcers • Swollen inguinal glands • Hair loss • Flu-like symptoms • Continues to progress
Syphilis Complications: • Damage to heart & brain, vision & hearing, bones & joints • CNS disease • Paralysis • Seizures • Mental changes!

Genital Herpes Signs & Symptoms: • Painful sores (weep, scab over, heal) • Swollen glands • Low-grade fever • Body aches
Genital Herpes Complications: • Contagious between outbreaks • Occurs again and again • Life-long infection • Pregnant women can pass to baby during delivery

Condyloma (“Genital Warts”) Signs & Symptoms: • Warts on external genitalia, vagina, penis, anus • Warts on nose and mouth • Itching • Irritation • Bleeding

HIV and AIDS Spread by: • Infected person • Thru sex, blood, needles or syringes • Drugs, piercings, tattoos THERE IS NO CURE FOR HIV OR AIDS!
