Presidency • President from 1901-1909 • Youngest president • Led America to Progressive toward progressive reform and strong foreign policy • In foreign policy, President Roosevelt was forceful, even threatening, with some foreign powers • Won Nobel Peace Prize for mediating Russo-Japanese war

  3. War with Spain • War with Spain started in 1898 • Roosevelt organized a group of volunteers for service called Rough Riders, many were his friends went to fight in Cuba

  4. Early in his presidency Roosevelt promised businessmen and industrialist that he wouldn’t attempt to limit their actions in he financial world • In his first years of office he began to reign in the excess of big trust • These monopolies became a main target of the Roosevelt administration

During a 1902 coal strike, 140,000 members if the United Mine Workers challenged their employers for better pay and improved working conditions • Public opinion was on the side of the miners • When the mine owners balked at Roosevelt’s heavy-handed involvement, he threatened to call out the army and have soldiers occupy and operate the mines • A settlement soon came with a pay increase for the miners
