Life Before President • In 1876 Theodore began college at Harvard • Theodore met Alice Hathaway, and he decided he wanted to marry her • In 1880, he graduated from college at Harvard • On February 2nd, Alice Hathaway had her 1st daughter, but she died in childbirth • Theodore later remarried Edith Kermit Crow, and had five children • In 1897, President McKinley made him Assistant Secretary of Navy • In 1898 he became governor of New York • In 1900 Theodore was made governor of New York • In 1900, Theodore was made Vice President to William McKinley • On February 4, 1901, McKinley was shot and killed, Theodore was made the new President
Life As President • Theodore wanted to protect natural resources • His motto was “Speak softly and carry a big stick • Theodore was the 26th President • He wanted to end corruption • Theodore established 5 national parks, 18 national monuments, and 51 wildlife refugees • His Vice President was Charles Fairbanks • Theodore finished McKinley’s term, then served one of his own
Later Years Went to Africa Ran in Progressive Party also know Moose Bull Party He traveled to Brazil in January, 1914, but he cut his leg, became ill , lost sight in his left eye, and couldn’t hear in his left ear. Theodore Roosevelt died in his sleep at 60, January 6, 1919
