Strategic project in the accessibility priority of the transnational BSR Programme 2007-2013 • Duration: 2009-2012, budget of 5.4 MEUR • 50 financial and associated partners from 11 BSR countries • Area of interest: whole BSR + Central Asia + China/India • Officially acknowledged implementation tool for the EU Baltic Sea Strategy • Meeting arena for public and private stakeholders to discuss transport and regional development challenges • Umbrella over transnational corridor projects (e.g. EWTC II and Scandria) TransBaltic in a nutshell

The foresight process by TransBaltic • TransBaltic motto: CONNECT – INSPIRE – SHOW NEW HORIZONS • Challenge of harmonising transport and cohesion policies (transport gateway + sustainable regional development) • Challenge of anticipating trends • 5 debates on the future geography of freight flows – Malmö, Vilnius, St.Petersburg, Stockholm, Bodö (March-April 2010) • Ca.150 stakeholders in transport and logistics attending • Results summarised in the foresight report by Tetraplan A/S Denmark and utilised in the TransBaltic Policy Report 2010

TransBaltic foresight scenarios THE GREEN SCENARIO a network of green multimodal transport corridors in the BSR  regulations by EU and other countries THE BARENTS SCENARIO intercontinental cargo flows attracted to the Barents Region  opening of the Northern Sea Route + transport investments on the European-Asian landbridge

Reflections from the foresight process • Russia holds one of the keys to the future geography of freight flows in the Baltic Sea Region • Threat: new East-West divide (green transport solutions no priority for new EU Member States and Russia) • Transport investments in Russian part of the Arctic - of primary importance for distribution of intercontinental flows • TransBaltic eager to keep dialogue with Russian stakeholders on their transport development priorities • Debates planned in Syktyvkar, Arkhangelsk and Murmansk (November 2010)
