Objectives • Students will understand different types of career opportunities in the fashion industry. • Objective 1: Describe key careers in the textile industry. • Objective 2: Describe key careers in the fashion promotion industry. • Objective 3: Describe key careers in the design and manufacturing industry. • Objective 4: Describe key careers in the retail industry.

  3. Types of Careers in Fashion • The fashion industry encompasses more than design and buying careers. • Careers opportunities exist in each of the four segments of the fashion industry: • Textiles • Fashion promotion • Design and manufacturing • Retailing

  4. Textile • Research Scientist: • Develops new synthetic fibers • Textile Designer/Artist: • Creates new patterns and designs that are used in making fabrics. • Textile Colorist: • Decides which colors consumers will buy. • Converter: • Responsible for how the finished fabric will look. • Marketing Analyst: • Conducts marketing research and evaluates information. • Sales Representative: • Presents the company’s products and services.

Fashion Promotion • Art Director/Designer: • Develops advertising that will be placed in all forms of media. • Graphic Designer: • Produces the advertisements based on direction from the art designers. • Fashion Copywriter: • Writes advertising material for fashion-industry clients. • Display Designer: • Creates displays and is usually involved with special events and promotional activities. • Fashion Model: • Models clothing on the catwalk, for ads or for mail-order catalogs. • Photographer: • Photographs models, fashion apparel, and accessories.

  6. Design and Manufacturing • Designer: • Designs clothing, etc. • Sample Maker: • Sews the designer’s sample. • Pattern Maker: • Makes the design into pattern pieces that can be used to produce garments. • Production Manager: • Oversees the design, manufacture, selling and delivery of fashion. • Piece-Goods Buyer: • Purchases the fabrics and trims. • Sales: • Sells products and provides service to retail buyers. • Market-Research Analyst: • Studies consumer habits.

  7. Retail • Buyer: • Buys clothes and accessories for a store or department to sell • Associate Buyer: • Assists buyer in presenting merchandise to staff, tracking shipments, and calculating markdowns. • Merchandising Coordinator: • Makes sure retail stores are fully stocked. • Trend Researcher: • Analyzes and forecasts trends, makes purchase recommendations. • Store Manager: • Oversees all aspects of the store’s operation. • Sales Associate: • Sells fashion apparel and accessories in a retail store.
