BLENDS Ya yu yo • In hiragana there are sounds we need to ‘create’ using two existing hiragana. • It is simple to do, - you ‘squash’ one sound to the other. • There are only three hiragana you can do this with, ya, yu and yo. • Usually these three sounds are ‘squashed onto the hiragana from the ‘i’ column of the hiragana chart, (e.g. ki, shi, mi, ri)
How to make a blend • To make a blended sound, the ya, yu, or yo is written about half the size of the rest of the hiragana, and it is usually a little lower on the line than the rest of the writing. • Here are some examples Shaしゃ cho ちょmyo みょ

Double Consonants • Sometimes in Hiragana we need to use double s, or double t, or double k etc.. The hiragana っ (tsu) allows us to create this effect. When you see the tsu written smaller than the rest of the hiragan, it says: • “The first letter of the next hiragana is doubled.
This means when you want to double any consonant in hiragana, you put a small tsu before the consonant you want doubled. • Here are some examples: • いって speak • ちょっと a bit
