  3. Climate Products • Climate Monitoring Web Site (NCDC) • Special reports – Aug 2007 heat wave, April 2007 cold, Katrina • Annual reports, monthly reports, weekly reports, daily reports • Special Products/Services • Convective SIGMRT Frequencies • Climate Extremes Index, • North America Climate Extremes Monitoring, • Global Hazards/Extremes, • Tropical Cyclone Monitoring, • Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale. • U.S. Extremes Query Tool • U.S. Drought Monitor and North American Drought Monitor

  4. Convective SIGMET Frequencies

  5. Climate Extremes Index • The percentage of the contiguous U.S. experiencing extreme climate conditions over time • Operational • Includes 6 types of extremes • Max temp • Min temp • Drought • Heavy Precipitation • Number of Days with Precipitation • Landfalling tropical storms and hurricanes

  6. Climate Extremes Indicator

  7. North America Climate Extremes Monitor Maximum Length of Dry Spell

  8. U.S. Extremes Query Tool

  9. Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale • Scale similar to the Saffir-Simpson and Fujita • Originally developed by Kocin and Uccellini • Operationally produced at NCDC within 1 day of a major NE storm

  10. U.S. Drought Monitoring • Collaborative effort between CPC, USDA, Drought Mitigation Center and NCDC • Consolidates and centralizes national drought monitoring • Input from the local and regional level • Created on a weekly basis • Rotational Leadership September 20, 2006 10

Other Products • Climate Impact Indicators • Crop Moisture Stress Index • Residential Energy Demand Temperature Index • Air Stagnation Index • NE index to potential Ozone Exposure • West Nile Virus Crossover Dates • U.S. Greenhouse Response Index • Index Climate on Residential Natural Gas Demand • Soy Bean Moisture Stress Index,

  12. Future Products/Services • Face-to-face with users • Conferences • NCDC hosting a NOAA Data and Information for a Changing Climate – a Conference for Public and Private Sector Users Nov 5-6, 2007 • Target areas: insurance, transportation, energy • 165 registered • will address • challenges and opportunities relating to changing climate for business and government, • the current state of scientific understanding about climate change, and • emerging data and information needs for a changing climate versus a stable one. • During working group sessions organized by sector, attendees will • work with NOAA scientists to identify climate information requirements of their particular sector, • explore NOAA’s capabilities to meet those requirements, and • develop recommendations that NOAA should consider in near-term and long-term planning to leverage and enhance its capabilities.
