  4. Chapter 1 – As you listen to chapter 1, describe these characters:. Who are the main characters introduced in Chap. 1? How do they meet? Why has the boy been crying? What is the setting (where does the story take place, and what time of year is it)? How does the weather affect the adventure? What did the girl discover in the box-room (storage room) in the attic? What use did she make of her discovery? 

  5. Quick writes 1 What you have read What you will be reading Digory & Polly want to believe there’s something creepy & sinister about the empty house & Uncle Andrew. Are you ever like that? Explain. Would you have opened the door? Tried on the ring? Digory says adults are predictable, not curious and “come up with uninteresting explanations.” What do you think? “Blub” is a British word for cry. How many synonyms for cry can you think of? Describe a secret place you like to hide. How do you feel when you are there? How do you decide who you can trust? Tell about a time you wish you hadn’t trusted someone. Describe a spooky dark place. Would you explore it alone? With a friend? Why or why not.

  7. Chapter 1 – review answers Digory meets Polly when he moves into his Aunt Letty and Uncle Andrew's home in London, England. His mother is really sick and his father is working in India. They explore the secret passageways, rafters and tunnels that connect the houses on their street. They think Uncle Andrew acts strangely. He forbids them to go into his study but they do by accident. The children become frightened when they are trapped in the study with him.  Polly says she must leave to go to dinner, but Uncle Andrew tricks her into touching a ring.  Digory warns her not to be a fool but she does and disappears leaving Digory and his Uncle Andrew alone in the study.

  8. Apostrophes Apostrophes can be used to show who owns or possesses what. Where should the missing possessive apostrophe go? "It was too late. Exactly as he spoke, Pollys hand went out to touch one of the rings. And immediately, without a flash or a noise or a warning of any sort, there was no Polly.
