  4. Viva Self Help Course • 3 separate day sessions • 11am to 4:30pm • Nov, Dec, Jan • College Examiners : • Fiona MacDonald (Birmingham DNA Lab) • Rob Elles (Manchester DNA Lab) • Teresa Davies (Cyto, now retired)

  5. Format • Range of topics covered • College examiner present to pose questions relating to the topics & prompt discussion • Candidates prepare 1-2 sets of notes/presentations in detail each day • Candidates should be prepared to discuss the topics at each session (focussed revision)

  6. Format (2) • All candidates to select papers of ‘significance’ to the service to bring to each session • Either discussed if time permits OR • Highlighted as a good paper (see feedback later) • Presentations to be uploaded to CMGS & ACC training pages

  8. Day 2 1. Business planning/Commissioning & Setting up a new service/coordinated national strategies 2. Staff management 3. Reporting time guidelines in relation to patient waiting targets 4. Quality - internal & external audit role of CPA (concept of a QM system)/ H&S 5. Workforce Review 6. Role of professional bodies

  9. Day 3 1. Differences between screening & testing role (national co-ordination e.g. UKGTN) 2. Genetic Test Assessment – ACCE framework gene dossier role of NICE 3. Clinical Governance & Risk Management 4. Working in a Foundation Trust 5. Carter Report / Lord Darzi 6. Information Systems – governance & security CfH 7. Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC)

Feedback • Examiners input very much appreciated • Relevance of some topics discussed as exam is open to international candidates raised • Eg UKGTN, MSC etc • Cannot be asked a question on them BUT you can quote the information to demonstrate a point • Topics still useful to cover • Hot topics • better to email pdf documents within the group • Use time at session purely for topic discussion
