  1. Progress in Building and Testing the Systems Platform Surrey ABC Team Chemical and Process Engineering Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences ABC project meeting GrowHow, 25 May 2011

  2. Chemicals, production routes and enabling UoS’s Platform – current status Evaluating four (4) ethylene routes Plan for further testing/evaluation Outline

  3. 1. Chemicals, process routes and enabling UoS’s (Greg’s excel file dated 3 March 2011)

  4. 2. Platform – current status

  5. Overall design of the platform Platform database UoS Reference Plant data Other data (e.g. price info) Simulation tool Synthesis/optimisation tool Modelling and optimisation engine GAMS User Interface Excel

  6. Characteristics of the Streams (Flowrate, Temperature, Pressure) Database - UoS Input and Output Material Streams Composition of each Stream

  7. Database-UoS There is a part related to Economics of the Reference Plant of the UoS in a particular scale.

  8. Simulation Tool: User Interface

  9. Simulation Tool: Functions The User has the opportunity to review a summary description of the UoSs included in the platform.

  10. Simulation Tool: Functions 1) The User indicates the connectivity of UoSs. 2) Once the User has indicated the connectivity the next step is to complete the flowrate of the biomass that enters the route.

  11. Simulation Tool: Functions The User can review the total inlet and outlet streams of the selected route.

  12. Simulation Tool: Functions The User can review the detailed data related to each UoS composing the selected route. These data are related to material flows, energy consumption, GHG emissions and the Costing.

  13. Simulation Tool: Functions The User can review the data related to the Economics, the Energy Consumption and the GHG emissions of the selected route

  14. Simulation Tool: Functions The User has the possibility to change some default numbers of the platform (e.g. Operating hr/yr, economic indices e.t.c) and to change prices of chemicals, utilities, catalyst and products.

  15. Simulation Tool: Functions The whole simulation tool is based on a database. Here the user can review the data of the reference plant of each UoS.

  16. Simulation Tool: Functions The user can review data related to each UoS in the scale of his preference.

  17. Intended function – rapid screening and integration of a large number of processing options Implementation Key process and performance models Superstructure representation Model linearization Interface with Excel database Evaluation Basic ethylene case study Extensions GAMS Optimisation LP MILP Numerical solvers NLP MINLP Master_model.gms Optimisation problem formulation, problem-specific but maybe generated by adapting some general formulations. process and performance models Model_x.gms Optimisation tool

  26. 4. Plan for further testing/evaluation

  27. Existing plan (as of 3 March 2011) Step 1. Database/Platform building - End of MarchStep 2. Platform building and testing with pilot study one (ethylene) - End of AprilTarget 1: general mechanism for connecting UoS's finalised (Surrey) Target 2: four routes for producing ethylene as per pilot study one simulated with process, economics, energy, and emission figures reported (Surrey)Step 3. Platform testing with pilot study two (ethylene + propylene glycol) - End of May Target 1: Stream adaptors introduced into platform to enable the handling of stream composition mismatch (this problem occurs in pilot study two but not one) (Surrey) Target 2: all routes in pilot study two simulated with result reported (Surrey)Target 3: Excel platform distributed to project partners for free testing (Surrey)Step 4. Platform testing with optimisation function - End of JuneTarget 1: test cases for optimisation defined (Surrey)Target 2: optimisation cases executed with report generated (Surrey)Target 3: Optimisation platform distributed to interested partners (Surrey) Step 5. Platform testing with other chemicals/routes - End of JulyTarget 1: simulation studies on other chemicals/routes not covered by Step 2 or 3. (responsible parties - tbc)

  28. One-month delay More time/effort needed for obtaining input and populating the database (UoS process data, cost estimation) Key remaining tasks T1: Connectivity building in the simulation platform to support the full “map” of processing routes T2: Testing the platform by assessing the full map of processing routes T3: Enhancing and testing the optimisation platform Progress assessment

  29. Suggested plan for the rest of the project End June (??) End July End May T1: Full connectivity in simulation platform T2: Optimisation platform – completion and evaluation Surrey Surrey T3: Evaluation of processing routes – testing and reporting NEPIC and others Capital and labour cost, chemical prices NEPIC and others

  30. Stream mismatch Financial incentives associated to the utilisation of renewables CHP Styrene Finally…other issues
