  3. High School Graduation Requirements • 220 total credits • 6 semesters of composite satisfactory or excellent citizenship • CAHSEE in ELA & Mathematics • Math-20 credits • Science-20 credits (10 credits of life science & 10 credits of physical science) • English-40 credits

  4. High School Graduation Requirements cont’d. • Social Science-30 credits (10 credits of World History, 10 credits of US History, 5 credits of economics, & 5 credits of US Government) • Physical Education-20 credits • Fine Art-10 credits or • Foreign Language-10 credits • Health-5 credits • Electives-75 credits (explanation)

  5. A to G Requirementsfor UC & CSU(minimum!!!) • “a” Social Science – 2 years • “b” English – 4 years • “c” Math – 3 years through Algebra 2 • “d” Lab Science – 2 years • “e” Foreign Language – 2 years • “f” Visual/Performing Arts– 1 year • “g” College prep elective – 1 year

  6. College Admission Testing • Admission Requirement – completed by December of the senior year. • ACT Assessment plus writing for the UC or SAT Reasoning Test & two SAT Subject Tests. (changes for the class of 2012) • For CSU, ACT Assessment or SAT Reasoning Test if less than a 3.0 gpa.

  7. Co-curricular Activities • Not required, but excellent preparation for the demands of college. • Select activities that are meaningful to the student. • Leadership, time management, commitment • Scholarship/financial aid • Community service

  8. High School Course Selection • Rigorous and demanding. • Improvement matters. • Course grades on the transcript all 4 years.

  9. Public Colleges & Universities • Typically large in student population (UCLA 26,536, Long Beach State 35,500) • Tuition is less compared to private & independent colleges ($25,135 Room/Board, tuition, fees, etc.) • Not connected to any religious ideology or practice • Bound by State legislatures, government statutes, tax base for funding • Self-reported high school courses and grades • Applications typically due by November 30th

Private & Independent Colleges & Universities • Smaller in population compared to public schools (USC 16,500, Stanford University 6,759) • Substantially more expensive than public schools (USC $44,082, Stanford $48,938 includes room & board, tuition, fees, etc.) • Not bound by State legislature nor government regulations • Not influenced by public tax base or structure for funding

  11. Private & Independent Colleges & Universitiescontinued • Application process includes letters of recommendation, possible interview, co-curricular activities, current official transcript, essay, personal statement. • Application dates vary by campus

Some Philosophy (a) • Developmental nature of the college process • Higher education can be a transforming experience • College Search should also be transforming, helping young people discover their true selves & what they want from life • College Search can measure a student’s readiness for college

  14. Some Philosophy (b) • Require students to take ownership of the process, but use the Goldilock’s process of neither too easy nor too hard. • We all need to be on the same wavelength/page to assist our students.

  15. What else? • College searches on line – planning begins now • Size, location, settings, campus life, major athletics, housing, Greek life, reflect on your high school experience • And…

  16. Preliminary College List • Reach schools: you fall below their academic profile • Target schools: you fit their academic profile • Likely/safety schools: you are above their academic profile • And then…

  17. And then… • Begin your brag sheet/resume • Visit college campuses with your families • Make notes regarding each school – the pros and the cons • Keep up the effort in all that you do – grades and learning all matter.
