  1. Cloud thoughts OECD Foresight Forum 2009 October 14th, 2009 Benoit Verbaere, SITA

  2. Top barriers to growth : the need to increase cloud confidence • Privacy& Security • Where is data stored, in which countries, can I control it ? • How is security enforced, guaranteed, controlled • Legislation& Compliance • Can I trace and audit trail activity happening in a cloud ? • Can I be compliant with laws and regulations ? • Performance & availability • Will the end user application experience be affected ? • What maybe the impact on the network (sizing, performance) ? • Administration & Operations • How does it affect my operational model ? • Can I build a standard offer across all my geographies ? • Sustainability

  3. Industry standards should also help cloud interconnects • The Data Center or Private Cloud needs to be able to “Spill Over” • To the external world including : Public, B2B & partners • As a way to offload resources and increase collaboration • A community Cloud can help • Share adoption across larger number of corporations, improving economies of scale • Increase geographical reach • Standards will help cloud adoption • Hence IT flex • Which then leaves more time for innovation

  4. Cloud as an enabler for development • Smaller companies are likely to adopt cloud faster than large MNCs. • It s on Goverment and MNCs that the confidence and convincing needs to be done • Cloud helps turn green • Could we subsidize the cloud with Carbon tax ? • As demand grows should we enforce that power and cooling gets consumed in countries that can control ITs impact on environment ? • Is connectivity the biggest challenge ? • How to anticipate/synchronize the needs ? • Will it be blocking the providers to extend/offshore their cloud in developing countries ?
