Chikungunya: • Viral disease • Transmitted by mosquitoes (Genus Aedes) • Outbreak attack rates of 38%-63% • Rarely fatal • Symptoms often severe and debilitating • Accute signs and symptoms (3-10 days) • Fever >102.5°F (39°C) • Severe pain in multiple joints • Persistent symptoms • Relapse of rheumatic symptoms (not infectious) may occur months after initial illness • Treatment • No antiviral therapy • Supportive care with rest and fluids • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and fever • Predicted range of chikungunya vectors by country • States and territories with chikungunya vector populations

  3. Prevention • No vaccine or medication can prevent infection. • Avoid mosquito contact! • Use insect repellent such as DEET or picaridinon exposed skin. • Reduce mosquito breeding sites • Empty or remove containers around the home or base that collect standing water.
