  2. Henri Matisse Gallery Look for: 1. Complementary colors. 2. Contrasting colors. 3. Free form shapes (irregular, asymmetrical). 4. Composition design (how is it put together).

  3. Henri Matisse Activity Write in your journal... What is the title of this painting? Where is the beast in the sea? What other sea life do you see? Describe the movement and free-form shapes in this work. How many spiral lines? Describe the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes. Draw examples.

  4. Matisse Teacher Page • Points for Discussion: Positive and negative shapes. Students should be able to identify art works by Henri Matisse. • Enrichment activities: 1. Show a variety of works by Matisse and others. Have the students identify which ones are by Matisse. 2. Cut out asymmetrical and symmetrical shapes to create a cut-out in the style of Matisse. • Fine Arts Standards: 1.6, 1.9, 2.4, 3.2, 3.4, (FA5) • Journal Writing Answers: Answers will vary.
